Amazon's try-on is augmented reality for shoes and some eyewear in its app. Its mail-order program, Prime Try Before You Buy, ended on January 31, 2025. Clottr renders any garment, from any store or your own closet, onto your own photo, and checks it against the wardrobe you already have.

How Amazon's try-on works
Amazon launched Virtual Try-On for Shoes in its iOS app in 2022, in the US and Canada: point your phone's camera at your feet and see a supported pair from brands such as Adidas, New Balance and Reebok, live. Similar augmented-reality try-on covers some glasses and sunglasses.
Prime Try Before You Buy, which shipped up to six items to try at home for a week, ended on January 31, 2025. For size, Amazon now points shoppers to the product page: personalized size recommendations and summaries of what other customers say about fit, which it began generating with AI in 2023.
What the research says about try-on
Seeing a product on yourself changes what people buy. In a study of a beauty retailer, customers who used augmented-reality try-on bought more, especially of less popular products, and the effect was largest for customers who were new to buying online (Tan, Chandukala and Reddy, 2022).
Returns are the cost of buying blind. US retailers estimated their returns at $890 billion in 2024 (National Retail Federation and Appriss Retail). A try-on before the order saves the trip back; a try-on at home happens after both trips are already booked.
Where Clottr goes further

Live augmented reality suits shoes: you move your foot and the shoe moves with it. And for size, Amazon's recommendations and fit summaries draw on what other customers report, which no render can tell you. If you buy most of your clothes on Amazon and size is the question, start there.
